Help us explore, conserve and restore our woodland – and shape its future!

We’re bringing together a community of volunteers to help develop the Reffwngiwm, our 26-acre woodland conservation project at Coed Talylan, on the edge of Bannau Brycheiniog National Park.

Our ambition is to establish a nature reserve dedicated to fungal biodiversity, where people can come together to explore the remarkable diversity of woodland life, contribute to ecological research and take an active role in restoring and protecting woodland habitats.

We’d love you to be part of it!

Opportunities to Get Involved

We’re developing a programme of free activities, including:

  • Fungal forays: Monthly gatherings to explore, identify and record woodland fungi, increasing to weekly during the autumn fungal season.
  • Woodland conservation days: Regular practical volunteer sessions helping to restore habitats, encourage native woodland regeneration and improve biodiversity.
  • Biodiversity surveys: Opportunities to investigate and record the woodland’s fungi, plants, animals and their ecological relationships.
  • Ecological research: Getting involved in monitoring, field studies and investigations into the role of fungi in woodland ecosystems.

Whether you’re an experienced naturalist or simply curious about woodland wildlife, everyone is welcome. We have a wide range of equipment, identification resources and microscopes available, and there are plenty of opportunities to learn new skills.

Help Shape the Future of the Reffwngiwm

We’re particularly keen to bring together a core group of volunteers who would like to play a more active role in developing the project.

Rather than simply inviting people to carry out conservation tasks, we want volunteers to help determine what those activities should be.

Together, we hope to investigate the woodland’s biodiversity, identify conservation priorities and co-design a long-term Biodiversity Action Plan and woodland management plan with fungal conservation at its heart.

We’re currently preparing an application to the National Lottery Community Fund’s People and Places programme, and community involvement will be central to developing the proposal.

We’re looking for people with a wide range of interests, experiences and perspectives. You don’t need specialist knowledge or qualifications, just an enthusiasm for the natural world and an interest in contributing.

Register Your Interest

Whether you’d like to join an occasional fungal foray, take part in practical conservation activities or help guide the project’s long-term development, we’d love to hear from you.

Please complete our short volunteer registration form below. It only takes a few minutes, and there’s no obligation to make a regular commitment.

Your responses will help us understand people’s interests, skills and availability, and bring together volunteers to begin developing the Reffwngiwm’s conservation programme.

Thank you for your interest. We look forward to welcoming you to the woodland and working together to create a thriving refuge for fungi and the extraordinary diversity of life they support.
