Volunteer Call-Out: Join the Refungium Fungal Survey Programme
We’re inviting volunteers to take part in an extensive two-year programme of fungal surveys as part of the Refungium Project at Coed Talylan.
Over the course of the project, 24 fungal surveys will be carried out:
-
16 on-site at Coed Talylan (8 per year) within our 26-acre woodland, and
-
8 regional surveys (4 per year) across selected local woodlands in the surrounding area.
The regional survey sites will be chosen with input and suggestions from the volunteer group. We are applying for funding so each survey can be led by a professional Field Mycologist, and the data collected will be uploaded and verified through the Biodiversity Information Service (BIS), West wales Biodiversity Information Centre (WWBIC) utilisiing LERC Wales.
The surveys will typically take half a day, and refreshments will be provided. Volunteers will have the opportunity to take part in genuine ecological research, contribute to regional fungal biodiversity data, and gain hands-on experience in fungal identification, field recording, and survey techniques.
Coed Talylan is well equipped for this work, with an comprehensive collection of field and lab equipment available through our Bioregional Lab, making it an ideal setting to develop your skills in fungal identification and recording.
We’re currently gauging interest and numbers from volunteers who are keen to commit time to this ongoing citizen science effort.
It is our hope that through this initiative we can help work towards creating a BMS affiliated Carmarthenshire Fungi Group.
