Wednesday 28 October 2026 | Hwb y Gors, Cwmgors | 6.30pm

We’re pleased to be joining Awel Aman Tawe for a special screening of Fantastic Fungi, the acclaimed documentary exploring the extraordinary world of fungi and their vital role in sustaining life on Earth.

Directed by Louie Schwartzberg and narrated by Brie Larson, Fantastic Fungi takes viewers on a visually stunning journey into the hidden world of mycelium, mushrooms and the complex ecological relationships that connect living organisms.

Following the screening, James Scrivens from Coed Talylan will be giving a talk about the Refungium, our woodland conservation and ecological restoration project near Llangadog, Carmarthenshire.

Introducing the Refungium

The Refungium is an initiative to establish a 26-acre woodland nature reserve dedicated to the conservation and restoration of fungal biodiversity.

While fungi are fundamental to the functioning of woodland ecosystems, they remain largely overlooked in conventional approaches to nature conservation. Through the Refungium, we aim to develop and demonstrate an approach to woodland management that places fungi and their ecological relationships at the centre of conservation and habitat restoration.

James will introduce the project, discussing our work to document fungal biodiversity, develop fungal-centred woodland management practices and create opportunities for community participation in ecological research and conservation.

The talk will also explore how we can better understand and support the complex relationships between fungi, trees, soils and the wider woodland ecosystem.

The screening will be followed by an open discussion, offering an opportunity to explore some of the themes raised in the film and consider how we can put these ideas into practice through local conservation initiatives.
